As Ralph Waldo Emerson rightly said, “the purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
Like Ralph, I believe that we have all been created with the purpose of adding value to the ecosystem in one way or the other and it is expedient we understand that it is no longer about us alone anymore, but about the greater good of the entire human race.
Inherent in all of us is an enormous reservoir of untapped talents and value and it is our responsibility to find out where to dispense our inherent value and become useful to humanity.
Is it in the field of politics, entertainment, sports, science, and technology or education? Wherever it may be, we must endeavor to be useful and make some difference.
Being useful or valuable does not have to be on a grand scale where the whole world would know your name. Like the contributions of Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Alinko Dangote, Lebron James or Oprah Winfrey.
But you can be the school teacher that inspired hope in his students, the coach that believes in his athletes, the policeman or military man that ensures that we live in safety or the work colleague that makes the life of her coworker’s easier, the employer (CEO) that gives value to his employees and customers or even the comedian that makes people laugh so that they forget their troubles at least for a while 🙂 the list is endless.
Perhaps you may be wondering where and how do I dispense my value? My answer to you is, start from where you are, bringing value to one person at a time. Ensure you bring value to the people around you, even with your social media posts. Do the people who visit your wall live better and well informed than they came? Are you a son or a daughter with parents, then bring your parents some value, bring your community value.
And as you start with one person at a time before you realize you are reaching thousands and the news about you is reaching others and they are inspired by you and then the cycle continues.
We have been created for a purpose, so we must live with purpose!
